The door is locked but the key can be obtained by un petrifying the lion gaurd using the fragrant branch of yore closest to the first bonfire in the area.
To obtain the key you must first go through the black gulch drop down to a secret platform which can sometimes be seen with a torch or from the beginning bonfire.
